HONDA CB TRIGGER UNVEILED

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India had unveiled a new 150cc premium bike known as Honda CB Trigger. Few days back, there were rumors that Honda is about to launch Honda CB150R StreetFire which is a naked version of Honda CBR150R and there is so much confusions about the exact specifications of the bike to be launched. But now that the bike has been unveiled, we know that it wasn't StreetFire but Dazzler upgradation. Honda CB Trigger is more like an upgraded version of Honda Unicorn Dazzler, which is not doing good in terms of sales. So, with this new bike, Honda is targeting country's 150cc bike segment. Honda is doing significantly well in the market, where their share is also increasing. With the launch of the current bike, the company is expecting added strength to their portfolio, and thus inviting more consumers. Honda CB Trigger's tag line ‘Untame Yourself’, says a lot about the bike and its target group (which is to be youngsters of age 18-24).

KAWASAKI NINJA 300R EXPECTED TO LAUNCH ON MAY 2013

Recently PowerDrift spotted the bike Ninja 300R in Pune. There were rumors that Bajaj, which is looking after Kawasaki's Indian operations, might replace the existing Ninja 250R with 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 300R. But we are expecting these two to be sold alongside. While Ninja 250R will continue to compete with Honda CBR250R and Hyosung GT250R, Ninja 300R will give competition to the upcoming KTM Duke 390 and its full faired sibling.

The bike uses a new chassis and its frame uses main pipes made from high-tensile steel tubing that is 150% more rigid than the tubes in the previous Ninja 250R’s frame. The added rigidity provides much better chassis response and improved steering precision and feel. The bike looks a lot like Ninja 250R and adopt most of the design cues from its elder siblings.

A trusted source also informed us that Ninja 300R is being tested at Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) and also the bike has been through the ARAI tests. Bajaj seems full prepared and so we can expect it anytime around May. The bike will be assembled at Bajaj's Chakan plant and as the bike will follow the CKD route.

LEGENDARY MOTORCYCLE BRAND INDIAN GETS REBIRTH

Indian, America's oldest motorcycle brand, has recently been reincarnated. The iconic brand closed the production of its bikes in the year 1953. And since then, the company has seen many unsuccessful attempts to re-launch. But this time around, Polaris Industries, largest motor-sport brand in America, has taken the initiative to revive Indian once again. If it happens, the brand could pose a direct competition to the Harley-Davidson.

Polaris Chief Executive, Scott Wine, told that a debut new model to be called Chief, will be the first Indian model, which goes on sale in the US later this year. Mr. Wine expects Indian to generate over US$500 million (NZ$600m) in increased annual revenue for his company by 2016. If all goes right, Indian will be on track to compete against Harley-Davidson's dominance in the 600 plus cc segment of the global motorcycle market so far. The acquisition has already alarmed Harley-Davidson, for which Harley spokeswoman says, "We need to focus on what we do best, and have done for 110 years, which is Harley-Davidson."

Polaris will manufacture Indian motorcycles initially at Iowa, US, facility with other Victory motorcycles. Scott Menneto, the Vice-President of the motorcycle division at Polaris, promises that the production facility is the only thing that his two big-capacity motorcycle brands will share. The Indians, with their pushrod engines, will be clean-sheet designs, and not a single component will be shared with Victory. 2013 Indian Chief will get its power from a new Power Plus, 1,721cc V-twin engine, which uses an electronic fuel injection technology. While, Polaris is trying to make it a technically advanced bikes, it will also keep the large and sweeping fenders, low riding stance and front fender to keep its classic appeal.

The 2013 Indian Chief range includes five versions for the Chief namely Classic, Chief Dark Horse, Vintage and Vintage Limited Edition, the 5th and final model in the lineup will be the ultra-exclusive Chief Vintage Final Edition. Prices for the Indian range start at $26,499 for the Chief Classic and go up to $37,599 for the Chief Final Edition.

"We're spending a lot of money and time to make sure that we don't cross over at all." Polaris is going to showcase the new Chief at the Long Beach Motorcycle Show in December. Mr. Wine says that the Chief will definitely be more affordable than the equivalent Harley model. It's a positioning game that he's already played to great effect with Victory. "Think of how Chevrolet took the '68 Camaro and bought it forward to 2010 when it was re- launched. It was a modern car, with all the technology, electronics and quality, without losing the brand heritage." Polaris has already announced to introduce Victory motorcycles in India, thus we can well hope to see the Indian Chief as well.

The bike was exclusively designed for Asian markets, where the demand of affordable performance is rising constantly. Suzuki Inzuma has been developed right from the sketch board unlike the CBR250R and Kawasaki Ninja 250R, both of which have been based on sports bikes. They are expecting the bike to find a lot of consumers among the youngsters and those looking for a powerful bike in affordable price. Inazuma 250 has been optimized for low-to-mid range speeds which will be ideal for city traffic. However, the bike would still be smooth on open roads.

DUCATI MONSTER 795

Ducati Monster 795 is an entry level naked machine which is quite popular in our Indian bike market. Ducati Monster 795 is a low stance macho bike which borrows most of the styling cues from its younger sibling. The bike has a low positioned triple circular headlight which features pointed clear lens indicators on its both sides. To enhance the naked appearance of this bike, Ducati has not placed any type of visor and cowl on this bike. Ducati has stuffed the seat with high quality of fabrics which provides you good comfort on long journeys. The low positioned seat and handle bar is like a boon for short riders. It’s a light machine which can be handled easily. It steers easily through city traffic and offers confident handling on highways as well. The bike avoids frequent gear transitions which gives you stress free rides in city traffic. It can complete 0-100 km/hr in less than 5 seconds. IMPORT DUTY OF 800CC BIKES INCREASED

Government of India has increased the import duty of bikes having engine capacity over 800cc from 60 per cent to 75 per cent. The market of high-end performance bikes had started to gain momentum in past two years but this step might result in a slowdown in the segment. We know that companies are only allowed to import bikes above 800cc and below this they have to assemble bikes locally in India. The government's intention behind this step is to encourage local assembly of these bikes which means establishment of factories, employment for a larger labour force and higher investment. Though the decision might result in an initial slowdown, it will be beneficial.

high-end performance bikes

Shreyans, the official and exclusive importer for Bombardier Recreational Products, Ducati, Ferrari and Maserati in India, says, "The increase in import duties on CBU's and bikes over 800cc is indeed going to affect the growth of the automobile industry. A move which provided impetus to the industry, already under pressure, was needed. While aspirational products like Ferrari and Ducati may not have an immediate effect on demand, it may slow down the long range plan for India."

HONDA CBF STUNNER PGM-FI VARIANT DISCONTINUED

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has been doing well since the split of the partnership with Hero MotoCorp. Though Honda has launched some very good motorcycles in the Indian market, there are few disappointments. Honda CBF Stunner, which is one of the disappointment, has now stopped raving up the atmosphere for the company which is mainly due to the lack of updations.

HONDA CBF STUNNER PGM-FI

The other reason being competition with their counterpart Hero MotoCorp Ignitor, which is based on the same bike and is being reported to be running better than CBF Stunner. But I think the prime reason is the price(Ignitor is way cheaper than the Stunner PGM-FI). Honda was selling CBF Stunner in two different variants called Stunner PGM-FI and Stunner. There were a vast difference in the prices of the two, though there was no differences in styling or performance. While the PGM-FI variant was priced at Rs 65,845, the carburetted variant priced at Rs 56,348. Stunner PGM-FI was even costlier than Honda CB Unicorn, a segment above bike. To make things better, Honda now has decided to discontinue the CBF Stunner PGM-FI. The decision will not affect the sales of the motorcycle, but the company will get rid of the unnecessary loses, which was occurring due to the Stunner PGM-FI variant.
