Drought, a scourge of humanity, makes living impossible for farmers, destroying land, men and farm animals alike. With the death of cattle, and lack of water for irrigation, ploughing barren fields becomes futile. But not for Mr. Mansukhbhai Jagani an ordinary, not well educated farmer in Mota Devaliya village, Amreli district, in Gujarat who proved that “where there is a will, there is a way.”

Mr. Mansukhbhai Jagani with santi

Using his old motorcycle, the farmer developed a machine system called Santi for small farm holdings, complete with attachments for tilling, weeding and sowing. Several farmers in the district have caught on to the idea, and there are now close to 40 Santis in the district. It costs between Rs. 14,000-18,000, making it much cheaper than other mechanical ploughs and it performs several functions such as weeding, ploughing and sowing for an acre. Being a school dropout, Mr. Jagani in his tiny workshop, at his Mota Devaliya village, tinkered with a bullet motorcycle and converted it into a ploughing tractor which is much cheaper than a real tractor.

Mr. Mansukhbhai Jagani with santi
Extent of coverage
The bullet tractor ploughs an acre of land in just half an hour with only two litres of diesel. “When a farmer asked me for a replacement for his two bullocks, I got a flash in my mind inspired by a local mode of transport, the three-wheel taxi chakdo (common transport in the region), and designed what I call Bullet Santi,” says Mr. Jagani. The motorcycle’s engine was converted to a 5.5 HP diesel engine and the rear wheel replaced with an attachment with two wheels. Once a tool bar was fixed to the attachment this unique machine could carry out various farming operations such as furrow opening, sowing, inter-culturing and spraying.
Cost effective

A ploughing motorcycle named as "Santi".
The machine proves to be cost effective and fuel efficient, can plough an acre of land in just half an hour consuming only two litres of fuel. Ten hectares of land can be weeded in a day and the cost of weeding is a mere eight rupees a hectare.
The farmer says:
“This contraption can be attached to any motorcycle having with at least 325 cc (6.5 HP) by replacing the rear wheel with innovative assembly unit designed by me. Various agriculture attachments can then be attached to it for various farm operations such as shallow ploughing, inter-culturing, weeding, sowing and spraying.
“This device has the potential to improve productivity and reduce operating costs for farmers who are currently using bullocks but cannot afford the cost of tractors or power tillers.”
With the help of National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Ahmedabad, Mr. Jagani got a patent in India and in the U.S. for this device.

Excellent response
Mr. Jagani’s innovation was also displayed at the Indian Science Congress at Pune and at the Swadeshi Vigyan Mela at IIT, Delhi where he got an excellent response. He also got the opportunity to display his innovation in South Africa in an exhibition organized by the Department of Small, Medium & Micro Enterprises (SMME) of the Northern Provinces jointly with Commonwealth Science Council (CSC), London.

Global applications
The knowledge and skill of this rural genius impressed everyone present. In fact, his motorbike-polycultivator is considered a typical example of a product with global applications. With design inputs from NID, Ahmedabad, help in patent-application-filing from Boston, U.S., based THT, law firm and business-plan development by Sloan School of Management of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the innovation has literally gone places.

You'll probably find that shifting a motorcycle is easier than it sounds. Once you get a feel for where and the how the clutch disengages, how much throttle is required for smooth acceleration, and how much effort the shifter needs, the whole process will become easier and require less concentration.

shifting gears

There are three basic controls to operate when it comes to shifting a motorcycle: the throttle, the clutch, and the gear selector. The throttle revs the engine, the clutch engages and disengages the transmission, and the gear selector selects the gear. Pull the clutch towards you using your left hand, and you can rev the engine without moving the bike forward. But release the clutch while the transmission is "in gear" (ie, not in neutral), and you'll move the bike forward.

shifting a motorcycle

The gear pattern is selected by clicking a lever with your left foot, and is typically laid out as follows:
  • 6th gear (if applicable)
  • 5th gear (if applicable)
  • 4th gear
  • 3rd gear
  • 2nd gear
  • 1st gear
  • Neutral
Proper shifting technique requires the following maneuvers to be performed smoothly and deliberately:
  • Disengaging the clutch
  • Selecting the appropriate gear using the shift lever
  • Slightly revving the engine (twisting the throttle)
  • Gradually releasing the clutch (and not "popping" it suddenly)
  • Feathering the throttle while releasing the clutch, which will accelerate the bike.
  • Revving the engine for acceleration until another shift is needed

    shifting a motorcycle

The mechanics of shifting a motorcycle is as easy as those six steps, but doing so smoothly requires practice. Know your controls inside and out, and get a feel for how they work. Practice riding in an environment like an abandoned parking lot, so you don't have to deal with traffic or other distractions. And most importantly, stay safe and aware during the learning process so you're able to focus all of your attention on the task at hand.

Mahindra & Mahindra, the leading SUV maker in the country, stepped into the two wheeler segment after acquiring Kinetic Engineering, which it renamed as Mahindra Two-wheelers. Not too long after the acquisition, Mahindra launched its first bike Stallio 110, which was unveiled by Aamir Khan, the bollywood superstar. However, the bike could not prove to be successful, as its gearbox had technical issues. Therefore, the company pulled Stallio 110 out of the market and since then, no other bike has been launched so far by Mahindra. Now, the company plans to relaunch Stallio 110 with a new name, Mahindra Panthero 110. Aamir Khan, who is also the brand ambassador of Mahindra Stallio, has ridden this bike in his upcoming flick Talaash, which is soon going to hit screens. In a teaser of the movie, we observe Aamir riding the bike while Rani Mukhrjee sits behind him.

This scene is considered as the first promotional video of the upcoming Panthero 110 across the industry and we agree with this wholeheartedly. The Stallio 110 or now the Panthero 110 as it has been newly christened, is a mass segment bike and will target college students as well as daily commuters. We recently reported that the bike was spotted during test runs at several places in the country and will be launched in January or February 2013.

The Panthero 110, being a mass segment bike will try to lure college goers and the youth, apart from the daily commuters. The bike has been spotted testing at several places in the country and is expected to be launched by early next year. Just like Mahindra's cars and SUVs, which has a name ending in 'O', the Stallio and now the Panthero too has followed the same nomenclature. The yet to be launched Panthero, except for the name, has most of the features, the same as Stallio.

The all new Mahindra Panthero would be powered by a 110cc, four stroke engine capable of delivering a maximum power of 7.3 bhp and a peak torque of 8 Nm. The engine is likely to come mated with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The other features of the new Panthero would be the same as Stallio.

We expect that the company will launch a full fledged promotional video at the time of the launch that will also feature Aamir. However, it will be very difficult for Mahindra to make its way into the jam-packed commuter segment as the Panthero has to face the heat of competition from the likes of Hero Passion XPro 110, Honda Dream Yuga and Twister and is likely to come with a price tag of around Rs. 45,000.

American giant Harley Davidson is undoubtedly the most beloved bike round the globe, and it is so much in India as well. They have some of the best bikes in their Indian portfolio and now they are going to add a new bike Fat Bob in its Indian line up tomorrow, 22nd November. The Fat Bob will be made available across all Harley-Davidson dealerships in the country. Harley Davidson Fat Bob is expected to be priced at Rs. 10 lakh on road. Pricing is a big factor that is resisting Harley lovers to buy these wonderful rides. Harley Davidson is planning to establish a new manufacturing plant by 2014 to produce and assemble its bikes locally in India, and it will help them cut the prices of their bikes by upto 25%. So, we are expecting that the Harley bikes will get more buyers in future. For now, The Fat Bob will join the bike maker’s India line up which includes bikes like Sportster, Dyna, Softail, V Rod, Touring and CVO model range.

I first saw Matthew McConaughey on a bike in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days. Everybody knows that motorcycles are Matthew’s passion. In 2007 McCanaughey teamed his love of bikes with his charity initiatives auctioning off his commemorative Texas Longhorn National Championship Tribute motorcycle when his alma mater won at the 2006 Rose Bowl.

Tim Allen's career has always focused on what it means to be a man, especially a man who loves power tools and making fast things go faster. It should come as no surprise that Allen is a visor-down kind of guy. In this case with a Ducati Diavel, a naked 162-horsepower machine meant to combine the comforts of touring with the performance of a sport bike.

For a man sometimes known as the French Elvis Presley, that would be Parisian-born singer and actor Jean-Philippe Smet, better known as Johnny Hallyday -  the commanding and somewhat quirky Harley-Davidson Trike is a fitting ride. With an overall length of 105.8 inches, a wheelbase of 66.6 inches and every creature comfort imaginable on two wheel , not to mention 6.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity that can hold up to 80 pounds, it might actually be the ultimate touring machine.
